An Existential Crisis - Short Film



This was our first attempt at creating a short film. From this, we know what we'd do differently next time. First things first, we only had two hours to plan and film this so if we were to do it again, we'd have it planned in more detail using a script or storyboard and we'd know which angles we wanted to film from rather than experimenting on the spot. We'd know which shot types to use and how long we were holding them for, to work out the pace of the film. We'd have probably used two cameras to film both sides of the conversation so that during editing we could cut between the two.

Pale Man Scene

Analyzing the Pale Man scene of Pan's Labyrinth.  Typical fairy-tale conventions of other worlds, Ofelia needs to complete 3 tasks and is about to be given her next challenge, we see throughout the film that a sequence of 3 is often used.  The mise-en-scene denotes her looking through the book to see her next task. The room is dark with a cold blue wash as there is no natural light. We see a long shot of Ofelia reading, this highlights her escapism.  She looks in the book and we see what she needs to do. Camera Shots

We decided to take the camera out and experiment with some different shot types.  Medium Shot - Usually a shot of a person from the waist up.  Long Shot - This is a shot of a persons full body,  to toe.    Tilted Frame - this is when you tilt the camera so a shot is off balance. This is typically used to portray that a person is in an intoxicated state.  Extreme Long Shot - this is usually of a person head to toe with extra space surrounding them. This can often make the subject look isolated. Extreme Close Up - is typically of a persons eyes or specific feature.  Close Up - A close up of a person's face, there is not much room left for surroundings. High Angle Shot - This is when the camera points down at the subject which makes it look inferior and vulnerable.           ...
