Final Scene of Pan's Labyrinth
Shot of Vidal with the fire burning behind him, the flames look like wings as if he is a demon and it's representing hell, this shows his evil nature. Breaks the fairy tale conventions of having an evil step-father opposed to an evil step-mother.
Vidal looks at his pocket watch which represents the psychological pressure of his father.
We see Ofelia clutching her brother who is wrapped in a white blanket which highlights his innocence. There is a bright flash from an explosion and the amber light connects Ofelia and her brother to the fantasy world. Ofelia begins running with the baby and Vidal chases after her.
Mercedes is searching for Ofelia, she enters the room first and is leading the men which shows her importance. The colour palette is warmer which symbolises the mixture of the fantasy and real world.
We see the chalk on the wall which again mixes the fantasy with reality.
Ofelia runs through the labyrinth and the magical walls open for her - she's the princess, Vidal chases her - he appears disorientated - but the walls don't open for him.
We see the faun who holds the knife, the sound effect of the knife shows how sharp it is - its sacrificial. The faun wants to prick the baby's finger as he needs the blood of an innocent to open the portal but Ofelia refuses to use her brother as a sacrifice, she protects him. Which shows that she has her own mind and makes her own destiny.
Vidal is looking on but he can't see the faun - he is not in tune with the magic world.
Vidal approaches Ofelia from behind and we see a shot of him on the left - he's evil. Ofelia is looked down on, she appears vulnerable. Emotional music plays as she is shot by Vidal.
Doesn't scream after she is shot - she's brave. Lifts up her hand and we see it covered in blood. Vidal runs off with the baby - again, he is to the left of her.
Ofelia hits the floor and the blood has been highlighted to make it look more red, she is wearing white which connotes her innocence.
Fire in the background - destruction of fascism, makes Mercedes and the rebels look warm. Captain hands over the baby , he knows he has been defeated.
We see the pocket watch again suggests he is going to die like his father.
We see her blood dripping and the full moon which suggests that the task has been completed - she's the sacrifice that will open the portal.
Mercedes hums the lullaby - she's still a child that needs to be soothed. Throughout the film we see the repeated motif of the lullaby.
Amber colour of warmth appears and pollen floats around in the air as we see a transition from the real world to the fantasy, Ofelia's father is heard saying 'Arise, my daughter'.
Ofelia is wearing royal colours of gold and red, her outfit has changed except for her red boots which give connotations of Dorothy in the Wizard Of Oz.
Sequence of three is used again with the spare throne for Ofelia. Huge round mirror in the background linking the circular imagery to the fantasy world again.
Back to reality, we see shot of Ofelia smiling which suggests she is imagining this all.
Ending is left for the audience to interpret, was the fantasy world real? Or a figment of her imagination?
